Reserva Real 2012 also wins a gold medal at the prestigious international competition

Mas La Plana 2012, the Torres Family’s flagship wine, received another round of international accolades. After recently winning the highest honor at the International Wine Challenge, Mas La Plana now takes home the award for best Catalan red wine (Platinum Best Catalan Red) at the Decanter World Wine Awards 2017. The highly regarded wine competition also awarded a gold medal to Reserva Real 2012, another iconic Torres family wine from the Penedès. Both wines received scores of 95 out of 100 points.

The renowned wine competition and magazine describes Mas La Plana, a 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, as a wine with a “very Mediterranean nose with dense focused dark berry and black olive notes, fragrant herbal and medicinal hints and savory leathery hints.” With regard to Reserva Real, a Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc blend, Decanter writes that “luxurious oak-aging comes through on the ripe dense spicy black cherry nose, uplifted by hints of vanilla.” The wine was named “Best in Show” at two previous editions of the Decanter World Wine Awards in the red Bordeaux varietals category.

2012 was a very dry year for much of the vegetative cycle with the exception of a very rainy April and some precipitation in October. This significantly reduced yields, but produced grapes of outstanding quality, which resulted in exceptional wines.

The Decanter World Wine Awards are considered one of the most influential competitions in the world. At this year’s awards, the 14th edition, the judges blind tasted 17,200 wines. The competition divides gold medalists into categories based on price (over or under 15 GBP), style and grape variety. They undergo another tasting to qualify for the platinum medal. Wines that win this award can then compete for the honor of “Platinum Best in Show.”
