Torres buys vineyards in Ribera del Duero to produce an iconic wine

22 March 2015

Bodegas Torres has bought 14 hectares of vineyards in the Ribera del Duero designation of origin, in the province of Valladolid, consolidating its presence in this famous wine region, where, since 2003, it has owned a winery that produces its Celeste Crianza wine. The purpose of this operation is to ensure the supply of top quality grapes for a future icon wine of very limited production.

The recently-acquired vineyard is 23 years old and located to the north of Peñafiel, 800 metres above sea level. The Tinto Fino or Tinta del País vines, equivalent to the Tempranillo variety, produce very intense and elegant wines with great aging potential. The deep calcareous-clay soil with abundant gravel and the climate characterised by dry summers and long harsh winters with significant temperature fluctuations throughout the seasons, all contribute to the excellent quality of the wines from this region.

According to Miguel Torres Maczassek, General Manager of Bodegas Torres: “During the past ten years we have been present in Ribera del Duero we have established close relationships with many of the winegrowers in the region. This has allowed us to obtain good knowledge of the land and to identify the best vineyards suitable of producing top wines. For us, the quality of the wines is forged in the vineyard, more than in the winery”. He adds that, “our objective is to present in the near future an iconic Ribera del Duero wine. It will be a wine from our own vineyards and will have a very limited production. This is a project we are very excited about and one into which we can channel all the experience gained from producing wine in the Ribera del Duero during the past decade”.

Ribera del Duero was the first expansion of Bodegas Torres outside Catalonia, with the purchase in 2003 of a recently built winery, which the company has gradually expanded and equipped with the latest winemaking technology. The winery is located in Fompedraza, 900 metres above sea level and just to the south of Peñafiel. Here, its Celeste Crianza wine is produced, aged for 12 months in French and American oak, which has obtained good ratings in wine guides of reference of 2015.
