Reserva Real 2010 awarded the International Trophy in the Bordeaux category and Grans Muralles 2010 receives a gold medal

Bodegas Torres triumphs at the Decanter World Wine Awards 2015 with its Reserva Real 2010 (DO Penedès), which has been awarded the International Trophy in the Red Bordeaux varietals over £15, topping other Bordeaux blends from around the world. This award is the highest distinction given by this wine competition organised by the British magazine and one of the most important and prestigious in the world, which winners’ list was announced at the Vinexpo exhibition in Bordeaux.

Reserva Real by Bodegas Torres is the only Catalan wine, and one of the four Spanish wines, to obtain the International Trophy in this new edition of the World Wine Awards, which has awarded only 35 wines - from a total of 15.929 tasted - with this highest distinction.

Sarah Jane Evans MW, Regional Chair for Spain and Sherry at the Decanter World Wine Awards 2015 stated on the DWWA website that “Torres’ victory in a Bordeaux category is a further example of Spain’s growing reputation for quality” and “that Spain is the most exciting thing happening in European wine right now”.

Reserva Real 2010 is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot, and is aged in new French oak barrels for 18 months. This very limited production comes from Torres’ Santa Margarida d’Agulladolç vineyard, near Mediona, 400 metres above sea level. Its 4 hectares of very fine slate soil, known locally as llicorella, yields small amounts for the production of one of Bodegas Torres’ most exclusive wines. Reserva Real  (“Royal Reserve”) was created in honour of the visit of HM Juan Carlos - then King of Spain – to the winery in 1995 to mark Torres’  125th  anniversary.

The Decanter World Wine Awards 2015 have also awarded Bodegas Torres with the gold medal for its Grans Muralles 2010 (DO Conca de Barberà) which is made with the ancestral varieties Querol and Garró together with Garnacha Tinta, Monastrell and Cariñena. The unmistakable identity of this great wine lies in this special blend of these varieties and in the stony soil of its vineyard near Poblet. Its name refers to the great wall - which still exists today - that protected the monastery of Poblet from wars and mercenaries.

The Decanter World Wine Awards is the biggest wine competition in the world, which this year in its twelfth edition has registered a record participation. The jury was formed by 240 experts and professionals from the sector, among them 85 Masters of Wine and 23 Master Sommeliers, responsible for tasting the participating wines. The wines awarded a gold medal aspire to the Regional Trophy and these, in turn, to the International Trophy, the highest award in the competition.
