Nine Familia Torres wines with more than 90 Parker points

15 May 2018

Luis Gutiérrez, Spain's wine reviewer for the renowned ROBERT PARKER'S WINE ADVOCATE,  awarded more than 90 points to nine of the wines Familia Torres produces in Catalonia, according to the most recent ratings published in late April in The Wine Advocate. In his report Spain: Highlights from Cataluña, Gutiérrez acknowledges that “all the wines tasted are recommended, and the average quality is higher than ever “.

These are the nine Familia Torres wines recommended in the report:

Santuari de la Rosa 2016, DOQ Priorat. 94–95 Parker points

This is a very limited-production wine, which will be released in 2019. It originates from Familia Torres's new Priorat vineyard, 2.9 hectares of old Cariñena and Garnacha vines, most of them planted in 1939. According to Luis Gutiérrez, “It is surprisingly aromatic, floral, elegant and fresh (...). It’s a very elegant and refined expression of Priorat while keeping the character of the place through very good balance.” He concludes by saying, “This is by far the most elegant and balanced wine I have tasted from Torres in Priorat, and it’s among the best from the different regions where they work. Bravo to the new Torres generation for this wine!”.

Mas La Plana 2013, DO Penedès. 93+ Parker points

Luis Gutiérrez describes Familia Torres's flagship wine, a Penedès Cabernet Sauvignon, as “vibrant, tasty and lively, with focused and clean aromas and flavors and polished and elegant tannins.” He awarded the 2012 and 1982 vintages 93 points each.

Perpetual 2015, DOQ Priorat. 93 Parker points

Made from old-vine Garnacha and Cariñena, the 2015 vintage displays “more finesse and balance than the 2014s,” states Luis Gutiérrez, who goes on to say that the wine “shows Priorat character.” Perpetual 2014 received 92 points.

Forcada 2016 (experimental wine). 92+ Parker points

Forcada is an ancestral white variety that Familia Torres revived. It is grown on an experimental basis in Alt Penedès, at 500 meters above sea level. The wine presents “cold-climate parameters, quite unusual in a zone like this,” Luis Gutiérrez remarks in his assessment. He called the 2015 vintage, which he gave 91 points, “a surprising wine (...), with clean, precise, floral and citrus aromas.” He finds the 2015 vintage “a little more gentler than the 2016, with good balance and tasty flavors.”

Purgatori 2014, DO Costers del Segre. 92 Parker points

This is the third vintage of the only wine that Familia Torres produces in the Costers de Segre appellation of origin, on the l'Aranyó estate, where construction of a new winery is underway. Luis Gutiérrez found this vintage “fresher, more elegant and balanced than the 2013, which was already impressive.”

Reserva Real 2012, DO Penedès. 92 Parker points

This exclusive wine is a Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot blend grown in a small slate soil parcel in Alt Penedès. According to Luis Gutiérrez, it is “concentrated and powerful, in a 1990s style.”

Milmanda 2013, DO Conca de Barberà. 91+ Parker points

Made from old Chardonnay vines planted at the foot of Milmanda castle in Conca de Barberà, this is Familia Torres's flagship white. According to Gutiérrez, the 2013 vintage “feels younger, more vibrant and with better-integrated oak than the 2014,” which he awarded 90+ points.

Salmos 2015, DOQ Priorat. 91 Parker points

This is the second wine from Familia Torres's Priorat winery, a Cariñena, Garnacha and Syrah blend. This vintage “shows more finesse and freshness than the 2014, and there is more depth and complexity,” remarks Luis Gutiérrez. Salmos 2014 received 90 points.

Fransola 2016, DO Penedès. 90+ Parker points

A 100% Sauvignon Blanc varietal grown at one of the highest elevations in the Penedès region to preserve the wine's freshness. The Wine Advocate's taster describes it “as a vibrant and balanced vintage.”
