Familia Torres appears with two of its wines in the ranking of the 100 best wines of Spain of 2021, elaborated by the American critic James Suckling: Milmanda 2018 (DO Conca de Barberà) in position 34 and Mas La Plana 2017 (DO Penedès) in position 36. For the recently published report ‘TOP 100 WINES OF SPAIN 2021’, 1.500 Spanish wines were tasted, considering criteria such as quality, price, availability and the “wow-factor”.
Both wines – each scoring 95 points out of 100 - stand out as best of their region. Milmanda 2018, climbing 16 positions compared to the previous year's list, is the first wine from Conca de Barberà and the second from Catalonia (out of a total of 12). According to James Suckling, it is a wine with “bright acidity and a creamy, lightly waxy texture” and shows “excellent concentration and length”. Milmanda comes from the castle of the same name, a single vineyard estate near the Monastery of Poblet and protected by the Sierra de Prades, which provides a certain continental influence on the Mediterranean climate of the area. This, combined with mild temperatures and clay soils, favor the optimal development of a complex and elegant Chardonnay with excellent aging potential.
Mas La Plana 2017, the only Penedès wine that appears on the ranking, is, according to the critic, " One of the best Mas La Planas in a while” due to its aromatic complexity and "fine textured but very evident tannins", which will soften with a little more time in bottle. This is the flagship wine of Familia Torres, a Cabernet Sauvignon that comes from the estate of the same name, in the heart of the Penedès, with almost sixty-year-old vines. The vintage was dry in general and with a very hot start of the summer that advanced maturation and reduced the yield, but with an excellent sanitary state of the grapes.
In addition to these two wines, it is worth highlighting the 94 points that the other three wines that make up the Familia Torres Antología collection, received in this tasting of Spanish wines by James Suckling. These wines are Grans Muralles 2017 (DO Conca de Barberà), Reserva Real 2017 (DO Penedès) and Mas de la Rosa 2017 (DOQ Priorat).
