Familia Torres' agricultural plan to apply the regenerative viticulture model in all its organic vineyards has been recognised as one of the 10+10 Business Examples for the Climate by #PorElClima Comunity. The seventh edition of these awards, held in Madrid on 24 October, the International Day against Climate Change, has distinguished the commitment and climate ambition of twenty business initiatives of large companies and SMEs, from among the more than 60 candidatures submitted. The 10+10 Business Examples #PorElClima make visible the best examples of climate action by the private sector to address the climate emergency and promote decarbonisation actions.
In 2021, Familia Torres began a process of conversion to regenerative viticulture on all its estates in Spain. Today it applies it to more than half of its vineyards, about 650 hectares, and plans to extend it to all its estates in the coming years. In addition to recovering soils’ life, creating natural ecosystems that promote biodiversity, this agricultural model makes it possible to stop erosion and increase the resilience of vineyards. Regenerative viticulture also allows carbon to be fixed in soils through cover crops that absorb atmospheric carbon dioxide to store it in the form of organic carbon, thus helping to mitigate the effects of global warming. The family-owned winery is committed to this holistic model of vineyard management as a fundamental pillar of 'Torres & Earth', its strategy against climate change, which will help it achieve its goal of becoming a Net Zero emissions winery by 2040.
These recognitions have been promoted by ECODES, the Climate Action Area of the Ecology and Development Foundation, for seven years. The award ceremony for this edition, which was supported by CaixaBank and Iberdrola, was held at the Espacio Bertelsmann in Madrid. The award for Familia Torres' regenerative viticulture project was collected by the Director of Climate Change Josep Ribas, who explained what this viticultural model consists of and how it can contribute to mitigating global warming.
Companies #PorElClima is the initiative of the #PorElClima Community, which promotes the implementation of the Paris Agreement and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in the Spanish business environment, promoting ambition in this area to curb the climate emergency and move together towards decarbonisation. To this end, they have the collaboration of the Biodiversity Foundation, the United Nations Global Compact Spain, ECODES, Aclima, the Club for Excellence in Sustainability, Forética and the Spanish Group for Green Growth (Grupo Español para el Crecimiento Verde).
